Getting Ready for your Headshot?

Tips to help you prepare.

Female Headshot

Communicate Specific Requirements

If you are asked by your company or organization to get a headshot, inquire with them to see if they have certain requirements, level of dress or require a company shirt with a logo. If they request a specific backdrop color or image specs such as a certain crop or resolution, please send this information to me prior to your session.

Manage Your Time

Keep your stress level low, don't rush to your appointment. Do plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early. Give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to be afterward.

Self-care

Get a good night's rest and drink plenty of water the day before your session; make sure you are well hydrated. Moisturize your skin if it tends to be dry, especially in winter. Don't forget your lips; if your lips are chapped it will show in the photo so moisturize several days beforehand. Bring lip balm or lipstick to your session and apply as needed. Make sure your teeth are clean and free of food debris as well as lipstick color.

Make-Up

If you wear make-up, then keep make-up natural to enhance your features. Application should be Daytime wear; the goal is to look radiant and refreshed, not dramatically transformed. Avoid really sparkly products. Make sure mascara doesn't flake.

Hair

Avoid having your hair cut right before your session. If it has been awhile since your last haircut, plan for one a few days out. Use product in your hair if needed to reduce frizz or fly-aways.

Glasses

Clean your glasses with a gentle soap and soft towel or glass cleaner to make sure your glasses are free of smudges and dust.

Clothing

Select clothing that fits well and makes you feel good. Professional images help establish your professional identity; therefore, clothing choices should be deliberate and send the message that you take your work seriously, are reliable, credible and knowledgeable. In regard to level of dress, aim for business professional rather than business casual unless you are an employee in an industry where casual work attire is widely accepted. It is always better to dress for the job you want, rather than the job you have; think sports jacket with button-down shirt or blazer with blouse or a dress. Avoid outfits that looks seasonal. Instead, choose something that is more of a timeless staple. Lean toward solid colors avoiding busy patterns or strips. Choose long sleeve shirts and consider the addition of a jacket or blazer especially if you plan to wear a solid white shirt; layering adds dimension and white shirts can appear too bright in an image. Take time to try on the outfit several days in advance so you have the opportunity to make an alternative selection if you discover the clothing no longer fits quite right, has a stain or hole in it. Press out wrinkles and remove loose threads, lint, hair clippings, dander or pet hair. Prepare as if you were going to a job interview.

Business Professional vs. Business Casual Attire

Jewelry

Accessories can really bring a look together. Keep jewelry simple and avoid large pieces that might distract from your face unless it compliments the look you are trying to achieve.
